Soybean Comment

A good export report seems to have at least temporarily stopped the bleeding in the soybean market. Prices closed up marginally after seeing sharp declines earlier in the week. This market much like the corn market continues to rely on strong exports to keep prices moving higher. Next week’s USDA report will give traders a final look at U.S. production and the first official look at demand through the quarterly stocks report. In addition to U.S. fundamentals, the market continues to closely watch the weather situation in South America, which will drive this market through the second half of the marketing year. Support for March soybeans begins at $12.56, followed by $12.33.

Wheat Comment

Wheat prices closed higher today, and managed to close up 5-cents on the week. Today’s gains were fueled by technical buying and prices will likely continue to be pressured in the coming days from the fundamentals. Large global supplies and weak U.S. export demand continue to weigh on this market. Wheat prices have support at $5.96 and resistance at $6.09.

Corn Comment

Corn prices closed up today despite a disappointing export sales report that was well below market expectations. This market still faces a USDA report next Friday that is expected to raise production, and could potentially lower domestic demand as the first quarterly stocks report will be released that same day. While prices will likely be volatile next week expect them to stay in the established trading range between support at nearby lows of $4.10 and resistance at $4.30.

Cotton Comment

Cotton futures closed sharply lower today. After seeing significant gains throughout December, the market has begun its correction in January. After testing resistance at 85-cents we have seen this market fall off sharply and lose almost 2-cents. The cotton market continues to face large global supplies and uncertainty over China’s cotton policy which will likely limit up-side potential. Strong support for this market begins at 80.29-cents.

Rice Comment

Rice futures posted solid gains again today. Today’s gains puts support for this market at $15.50, and puts rice in a position to test resistance at $15.65, with the next object $15.80. The market continues to be wary of large world stocks, and Thailand’s potential to increase exports in 2014.

Cattle Comment

Cattle prices were higher again today. Traders remain concerned about forecasts for more severe winter weather in the Western Plains which will limit marketings and hurt performance.
