Soybean Comment

Old crop soybeans were supported today by a good export inspections report this morning. USDA says 56.4 million bushels were inspected last week, a solid total well above trade expectations of 38-50 million. The return of hot weather to Argentina was supportive as well. New crop contracts, however, remained under pressure from prospects of large plantings on the horizion. The final USDA production report of the 2013 crop will be released this week, and the stocks report will provide a look at demand so far. After violating trendline support last week, March has recovered and is now trading back above that support, which is currently at $12.71.

Wheat Comment

Wheat prices were mostly unchanged when the closing bell rang today. Export inspections of 13.6 million bushels were near the bottom but within the range of trade expectations. Large global supplies and weak U.S. export demand continue to weigh on this market. Wheat prices have support at $5.96 and resistance at $6.09.

Corn Comment

Corn prices were higher across the board, despite a disappointing export inspections report. USDA says that 19.3 million bushels were inspected last week, while trade expectations were 21-30 million. This market still faces a USDA report on Friday that is expected to raise production, and could potentially lower domestic demand as the first quarterly stocks report will be released that same day. While prices will likely be volatile next week expect them to stay in the established trading range between support at nearby lows of $4.10 and resistance at $4.30.

Cotton Comment

Cotton futures closed sharply lower today. After seeing significant gains throughout December, the market has begun its correction in January. After testing resistance at 85-cents we have seen this market fall off sharply and lose almost 2-cents. The cotton market continues to face large global supplies and uncertainty over China’s cotton policy which will likely limit up-side potential. Strong support for this market begins at 80.29-cents.

Rice Comment

Rice futures posted solid gains again today. Short covering as the January delivery date approaches is generally supportive. Recent gains put support for March at $15.50. Prices failed at resistance at $15.69 today. The market continues to be wary of large world stocks, and Thailand’s potential to increase exports in 2014.
