Soybean Comment

Soybean prices closed down today. Continued concern over the affect the potential record crop in South America will have on global supplies continues to push prices lower. Additionally, the market is preparing for more supplies and uncertainty about demand as we will get the first look at domestic demand thanks to the quarterly stocks report. Friday’s USDA report will likely see yields increase, with the average trade estimate 43.19/bu/acre (compared to 43 in November). While production increases are expected to be small the bigger question remains what the USDA will do to demand.

Wheat Comment

Wheat price moved lower today, giving back all of their recent gains and putting in a new contract low. Along with all of the hype for corn and soybean production numbers, the USDA will also release its winter wheat seedings report on Friday, and traders are estimating that winter wheat acreage will be up some 500,000 acres from 2013. This extra acreage combined with large international supplies continues to push wheat prices lower in search of its price floor.

Corn Comment

Corn prices fell lower today. Concerns about the more supplies and less demand continue to worry traders ahead of Friday’s USDA report. With the average trade estimate for yield at 161.1, this market will need demand to remain strong in order to prevent further price erosion. If the USDA report shows struggling demand look for corn to move lower and likely set a new low. In addition to concern over Friday’s report corn prices were pressured today by large ethanol stocks, which are the largest since September.

Cotton Comment

Cotton prices closed sharply lower today. This market remains unable to break the 85-cent ceiling that seems to be in place. With prices overbought this market could see a correction and retrace to 80.29-cents. As we head into Friday’s report we have to wait and see what traders will follow in this report: U.S. fundamentals or Global fundamentals.

Rice Comment

Rice prices closed the day mixed. With the March and May contracts seeing marginal gains and the other contract closing down slightly. With very light trade today, this market remains cautious ahead of Friday’s USDA report. While changes in the rice balance sheet maybe small, rice will likely follow corn and soybeans on their ride.

Live cattle closed higher today, and managed to recover all of yesterday’s losses. While the fundamentals of this market continue to point to higher prices as supplies remain tight, expect futures prices to begin to move lower as this market is overbought.
