Soybean Comment

Soybean prices experienced good gains today, though closed well off of daily highs. The USDA increased yield to 43.3 bu/acre, which was what the average trade estimate was for soybean yields. Increases in production were offset by a larger export forecast, which led to no change in soybean ending stocks. Today’s increase in exports, remains less than the total sales to date, and suggests the USDA expects some of these sales to be cancels. Look for gains in soybeans to be limited as the Brazilian crop continues to grow. The USDA increased the Brazilian crop another million tons today, but the USDA estimate remains some 2 million tons lower than internal Brazilian estimates. Nearby soybeans continue to see long term support at $12.55, and resistance at $13.50. As this South American crop is harvested and U.S. producers begin to make planting decision, the downside potential of this market remains far greater than the upside potential.

Wheat Comment

Wheat prices were again a big loser from today’s report. While reports out of the U.S. appear bullish for prices in that winter wheat seedings came in some 2 million acres less than the market expected, international wheat supplies were increased and the gap between production and consumption in this year rose to 9 million mt. Look for wheat prices to continue to move lower, despite the market being oversold. With current fundamentals, this market is going to need additional gains in outside markets to slow price declines.

Corn Comment

Corn prices see strong gains today after the USDA surprised everyone and reduced yield for 2013. Before the report the low end of trade expectations for corn was 159.8 bu/acre and the USDA released 158.8 bu/acre. While yields were lower, the USDA increased acreage some 500,000 acres limiting the production decline to just 64 million bu. Additionally, the general consensus was that the stocks report would likely show lower use during the first quarter, however, number showed record first quarter corn usage. With all of the adjustments, corn stocks were reduced to 1.631 billion bushels, way less than the 1.861 billion bushels the market expected. Look for prices to rally on this news in the coming days. Nearby corn prices could test resistance at 4.40, and 2014 corn could open pricing opportunities near $4.75. Look for opportunities in the coming weeks to price a portion of the 2014 production as these prices are likely to see some gains in the coming weeks.

Cotton Comment

Cotton prices closed up slightly today. While the market saw global stocks rise again today, the increase in U.S. exports remains bullish for U.S. prices. Longer term this market will remain focused on how China decides to handle its cotton stocks through additional policy changes.

Rice Comment

Rice prices closed higher today as the USDA increased domestic demand for rice and again lowered U.S. stocks. U.S. rice stocks remain well above year ago levels, however global rice supplies were increased again in this report to some 105.2 MMT. Large global supplies and strong export completion continue to limit U.S. rice exports.
