Soybean Comment

Soybean prices posted solid gains today, but most active March continues to be capped by resistance at $13. Weekly export inspections of 59.381 million bushels were strong, beating trader estimates that ranged from 45-50 million. Look for gains in soybeans to be limited as the Brazilian crop continues to grow. The USDA increased the Brazilian crop another million tons last week, but the USDA estimate remains some 2 million tons lower than internal Brazilian estimates. As this South American crop is harvested and U.S. producers begin to make planting decision, the downside potential of this market remains far greater than the upside potential.

Wheat Comment

Wheat prices saw rare strength in the market today. After putting in a 3.5 year low last week, the market rebounded today. Today export inspection report provided this oversold market just the news it had been waiting for as inspections came in at 25.19 million bu compared to expectations of 13 to 19 million bu. With the current fundamentals, wheat will be lucky to manage a rally to test resistance at $6.00. Current prices will likely be a good opportunity to price remaining wheat. As we head into harvest abundant supplies and weak export demand will likely keep pressuring wheat prices lower.

Corn Comment

Corn prices saw modest gains today after a disappointing export inspection report this morning. The market which saw strong gains after Friday’s USDA report lowered stocks by some 161 million bushels, did not see a strong follow through today. With export inspections expected to show between 21 and 28 million bushels exported, the market was disappointed to only see 20.9 million bushel exported last week. This market will need to see demand remain strong for prices to continue gains. While nearby contracts closed up slightly, contracts for next year’s crop closed mixed. With weaker soybean prices in November 2014 and beyond the price spread between corn and soybeans has fallen to 2.43 down from more than 2.5 just a couple of weeks ago. While this spread still favors more soybeans, corn is becoming more competitive. The market needs to buy more soybean acres for 2014, so expect these prices to begin a bidding war in the coming weeks as the USDA will start surveying for the 2014 Perspective Planting Report in February.

Cotton Comment

Cotton prices are beginning to consolidate between 82-cents and 85-cents. With current fundamentals it is unlikely this market will break resistance at 85-cents, and since its recent rally prices have been unwilling to commit to moving below the 82-cent level. If prices were to move below 82-cents the next support would be at 80.89-cents.

Rice Comment

Rice futures ended mixed as the USDA increased domestic demand for rice and again lowered U.S. stocks. Global rice supplies were increased again in this report to some 105.2 MMT. Large global supplies and strong export completion continue to limit U.S. rice exports.
