Soybean Comment

Soybean prices posted solid gains today, with March continuing to break through resistance above $13. The next level of resistance is now$13.38. Look for gains in soybeans to be limited as the Brazilian crop continues to grow. The USDA increased the Brazilian crop another million tons last week, but the USDA estimate remains some 2 million tons lower than internal Brazilian estimates. The official Brazilian estimate is 90.3 million metric tons, but the Brazilian ag minister has recently been quoted as saying the crop there could easily top 95 million metric tons. As this South American crop is harvested and U.S. producers begin to make planting decision, the downside potential of this market remains far greater than the upside potential.

Wheat Comment

Wheat prices fell lower today as the market begins to look beyond the good U.S. export numbers released on Monday. A less than stellar Export Sales Report tomorrow could likely push wheat back to test intraday contract lows at $5.60. While this market remains oversold, declines in corn prices and large global supplies make it difficult for wheat to maintain any significant gains.

Corn Comment

Technical selling again pushed corn prices lower. Technical signals, combined with another DDG rejection in China put downward pressure on corn prices today. Tomorrow’s export sales report is a big one for corn, if the report fails to meet trade expectations look for prices to continue to fall and the March contract test support at $4.20. The corn market needs signs of additional demand as supplies have begun to flow from the farm after Friday’s USDA report pushed prices higher. Corn prices need to move higher and test resistance at $4.40 before we can be sure this market has put in its lows at $4.10.

Cotton Comment

Cotton price saw strong gains today. Improving economic indicators have traders optimistic about cotton demand. As the economy improves so does the consumer’s ability to purchase new clothing. However, cotton prices are at a key resistance area around 85-cents and have been unable to break that resistance as of late. Additional gains are likely to be limited due to large global supplies; however uncertainty about the quality of those supplies and location continue to help support prices.

Rice Comment

Rice posted across the board gains. Global rice supplies continue to limit the upside potential of this market. World stocks were increased again to 105.2 MMT in the latest USDA report. Resistance for March is Monday’s spike high of $15.74. Support begins at $15.36.
