Soybean Comment

Soybeans reclaimed early losses to change mostly a penny higher. Huge losses on Tuesday have left the charts looking weak. March has a downside objective of the January low of $12.62 ½, while May has support at $12.50. New crop November could be headed for a retest of support between $10.55 and $11. Rains in Argentina are improving yield prospects there. U.S. acreage is widely expected to be up from 2013. If these acreage gains and normal yields are realized the tight soybean supplies we continue to discuss would likely be solved. With global stocks already at comfortable levels, if U.S. stocks were to increase it would open the downside risk in the market.

Wheat Comment

Wheat prices fell again today, posting its 9th contract low in the last 3-weeks. Large global supplies and weakness in outside markets are likely to continue to push wheat prices lower. While corn and soybeans battle for acreage, look for wheat to remain on the sidelines and see little benefit to any potential gains in these markets.

Corn Comment

Corn prices closed higher today. Nearby contracts continue to find support in the strong export performance. Prices for December also strengthened as the market begins to worry about the size of the Argentine crop. Some strength in the soybean market also provided support for this market. Look for the corn and soybean contract for the fall to follow each other closely in the coming weeks as the market works to ensure adequate corn and soybean acreage is planted in 2014.

Cotton Comment

Cotton prices fell slightly today on technical selling. December cotton remains unable to top the 80-cent level again retreating lower just before reaching 80-cents. Look for strength in the soybean and corn market to provide support for cotton as this market looks to buy additional acres in 2014..

Rice Comment

Rice prices recovered a bit today, but the charts do look technically weaker after Tuesday’s big losses. While U.S. demand for rice remains good, large global supplies and increased export competition are limiting U.S. export opportunities. With news that the Thailand government is selling rice at a loss, look for U.S. exports to remain suppressed. Resistance for March is last week’s spike high of $15.74. Support begins at $15.36.

Cattle Comment

Cattle prices continue to move higher and set new records. Prices were sharply higher today. Tight supplies combined with record boxed beef prices continue to support prices, as has recent weakness in corn prices. Nearby futures are extremely overbought at this point, though, so a correction could come at any time.
