Soybean Comment

Soybeans charted losses in early dealings but ended the day on the plus side. March did indeed test the downside objective of the January low of $12.62 ½, but managed to bounce off support there to close higher. May violated support at $12.50 before turning around. Today’s low of $12.47 ½ becomes support for May now. The market continues to be focused on supply, watching the weather and crop prospects in South America and speculating about U.S. acreage.

Wheat Comment

Wheat prices were unable to move any higher today, despite an export sales report that met trade expectations. Gains in outside markets helped support wheat, as fundamentals for this market remain weak. Wheat prices will likely continue to move lower as supplies for wheat remain well above demand.

Corn Comment

Corn prices manage to close in the black today after being down early. While export sales remain supportive of higher prices, the market is seeing little movement as actual exports remain slow and the lack of movement in the soybean market. While this market looks poised to test resistance at $4.36, the market is waiting for solid fundamental support to help prices. While reports of stronger ethanol production is bullish for price the fact that ethanol stocks continue to rise suppresses those gains. While export sales remain strong, our actual exports are not as strong, and continued concern over China cancellation limits these upside moves. The good news is the market looks to have established a bottom at $4.10; however prices cannot seem to get traction for any significant gain. December corn continues to trade at just under $4.50, December has resistance at $4.58 and support at $4.41.

Cotton Comment

Cotton prices fell again today despite a good export sales report. Export sales we up substantially from previous weeks as 551,700 bales; however, this was not enough to help maintain gains. While nearby gains were limited, December cotton saw sharp losses today that erased all of this week’s gains. With all of the uncertainty surrounding the global market and potential Chinese cotton auctions, the gains as of late will likely be difficult to maintain. Opportunities still exist to price cotton above 70-cents for next year. These opportunities could disappear at anytime depending on what China determines to do about their cotton policy in 2014.

Rice Comment

Rice was lower across the board but traded within a narrow range. While U.S. demand for rice remains good, large global supplies and increased export competition are limiting U.S. export opportunities. With news that the Thailand government is selling rice at a loss, look for U.S. exports to remain suppressed. Resistance for March is last week’s spike high of $15.74. Support begins at $15.36.

Arkansas Prices
Arkansas Weekly Livestock Summary

Cattle Comment

Cattle prices ended the day mostly lower. Tight supplies combined with record boxed beef prices continue to support prices, as has recent weakness in corn prices. Nearby futures are extremely overbought at this point. February seems to have run into resistance at $144.55 for now, and that could signal that a correction is near.
