Wheat Comment

Wheat prices saw some follow through from yesterday’s gains as Russia announced it will stop exports from one of its Black Sea ports due to extreme cold weather. Look for this to provide some short term support for this market; however, this does little to fix longer term fundamental issues like supply outpacing demand. Without continued support from export reports on Monday, look for this market to put in new lows next week.

Corn Comment

Nearby corn prices close the week up about a nickel after strong exports on Monday, were followed by almost 2 million MT of sales on Thursday. While strengthening demand provided a shot in the arm for prices it still was not enough to push prices over the high set after the January USDA report around $4.35. Corn needs a close above $4.35 to open the upside potential in this market. This market continues to consolidate between $4.40 and $4.20. New crop corn remains volatile as it continues to trade around $4.50. With little action in the November soybean price as prices continue to spend most of their time with in a dime of $11. One thing to remember is the price spread for these commodities is very important in January and February as these rates are used to set the crop insurance prices for 2014.

Cotton Comment

While nearby cotton prices rebounded after Monday’s sell off, prices still closed down just over a penny on the week. While a strengthening dollar is negative for cotton exports long term, continued strong export sales over the last few weeks is providing support for cotton prices. While exports helped nearby contracts recover some of the losses, December cotton was looking at the potential of a stronger dollar hurting our exports and pushed prices down more than 2-cents on the week. As we head into spring producers should consider marketing cotton early, as large global supplies and a strengthening dollar have the potential to push cotton prices much lower.
