Soybean Comment

Soybean prices closed lower today, however losses were not a dramatic as yesterday. While declines of recent weeks have pushed prices prices into over sold territory, weak fundamentals will likely limit any potential gains in this market. Much like with corn large supplies could push stocks sharply higher and lead to soybean prices at or below $10 not only for this year but also for 2015.

Wheat Comment

Wheat prices fell lower again today. Wheat prices have little support to move higher as large supplies and weak demand continue to plague this market. Low quality in some of our soft red wheat could force wheat to be sold at a discount to foreign and domestic customers.

Corn Comment

Corn prices continued to decline today. Larger .than expected third quarter stocks continues to weigh on this market. This combined with the continued prospect for a record yield in 2914 has prices retreating. December corn has lost more than 25-cents this week and could likely test support at $4 in the next couple of weeks. The prospect for higher prices is bleak, as long term forecast look, favorable to corn production. With large supplies will come large stocks, these large ending stocks in both corn and soybeans will push prices sharply lower, not only 2014, but also 2015 prices. If this record crop is harvest we could be looking at the highs in the 2015 corn market right now.

Cotton Comment

Cotton futures got hammered again today, but December did recover much of early losses to end near the top of the day’s trading range. All cotton acreage is now estimated to be 11.4 million acres. That is up 3% from the previous USDA estimate and up 9% from a year ago. Upland cotton is up 10% at 11.2 million while American Pima is down 11% at 178,000 acres. Expectations for weakening demand also factor in heavily to today’s price action. December is now trading at its lowest level in a year. Today’s low of 72.20 cents is now the first level of support.

Rice Comment

Rice futures ended the day mixed. USDA says that U.S. farmers have seeded 3.05 million acres of rice, up 22% from 2013 and up 6% from the previous estimate. Long grain plantings are estimated to be 2.33 million acres, with medium and short grain at 685,000 acres and 31,000 acres respectively. Arkansas farmers are estimated to have seeded 1.571 million acres of rice. The stocks report showed a total of 50.4 million hundredweight in all positions. On farm stocks were 4.83 million hundredweight and off farm stocks totaled 45.5 million cwt. USDA said that for the week ended June 29, 69% was in good to excellent condition. Weekend flooding in parts of Arkansas, though, will likely result in a much different picture in next week’s report. September fell to a new low of $13.40 last week but is now attempting to build on support at that level.

Cattle Comment

Livestock prices responded favorably to lower grain prices today. Tight supplies and cheaper feed continue to provide support to this market. While technical pressure may limit some upside potential in this market the long term outlook is for prices to remain strong.
