Arkansas Daily Grain Report

Soybean Comment

November beans found support at $11.75 and prices bounced higher today. New crop net sales of 1.02 million metric tons were a bit above trade expectations and supportive for prices. With the next USDA report a week from today, expect price movement to be volatile as traders position themselves ahead of the next report. USDA says that 64% of the crop is in good to excellent condition, but the crop is behind schedule, with only 39% of acres setting pods, compared to an average of 51%.

Wheat Comment

Wheat prices weakened today, as news that India is releasing stocks for exports and larger crops in Bulgaria means additional competition for US exports. U.S. wheat remains expensive on the international market and prices will have to decline to keep U.S. wheat competitive. With additional supplies hitting the market, the concern now is that U.S. exports will be heavily frontloaded and may see significant declines in sales later in the year.

Arkansas Daily Grain Report

Corn Comment

Corn prices finally posted modest gains. News that Tyson will not accept cattle fed with a particular supplement means feedlots will demand addition corn, thus supporting prices. Additionally, today’s export sales report showed stronger than expected exports which remain supportive of prices. Prior to this week, sales for next year rose more than 145 million bushels in July; however, sales this week we were only 8.4 million bushels. This may be an indication that traders are expecting lower prices in coming weeks. While the corn market continues to be oversold, there has yet to be any significant fundamental or outside market push to help move prices higher. Corn prices will likely see another day of gains tomorrow as traders take profits out of the market ahead of the weekend and next Monday’s USDA report.

Cotton Comment

Cotton prices continued their climb today as the weak dollar remains supportive. Expect to see additional posturing by traders ahead of next week’s USDA report. The market unlikely to break out of its established trading range between a floor at 82-cents, and a ceiling at 89.5-cents.

Rice Comment

September rice futures were lower again today. The market charted a wide bearish reversal on Monday and that has set the tone for the week. Several layers of support were violated on the way down, with the next technical support near $15.14. Tough competition on the export market is keeping a lid on the market despite a smaller crop. Cheaper Asian origin rice is making it hard for U.S. rice to compete. The USDA crop condition ratings were not changed much from last week to this week, with 70% of the crop in good to excellent condition.

Hog Comment

October hogs traded in a narrow range within yesterday’s range. Yesterday’s key reversal is still valid even though prices ended a bit higher today. The market looks likely to retest support at $82.93, and would need to close above resistance at $87 to negate the negative signal.
