Soybean Comment

November soybeans closed down slightly today after closing higher everyday since the USDA report in Monday. Today’s declines are the result of profit taking after a week of strong gains. November soybeans face strong resistance at $12.75 before they can reach the $13. We saw the market fizzle out in this area back in July as it tried unsuccessfully to top $13. Reports out of Brazil indicate their soybean acres could be up significantly this fall if this happens it could alleviate some of the tightness here in the U.S. as international customers could wait for cheaper supplies from South America.

Wheat Comment

Wheat prices gave back all of yesterday’s gains. As fundamentals remain weak for wheat price movement remains tied closely to what occurs in the corn and soybean markets. As competition increases in the global market with Ukraine forecasting a large wheat crop, U.S. wheat prices will need to decline to remain competitive.

Corn Comment

Corn prices are back down again today. Yesterday’s report boost was short lived, as weather again becomes the driver of the market. While more than 3.4 million acres of corn were prevented planting the expectation that favorable weather will boost yields continues to dominate the market. While the USDA forecast on Monday showed yields down, the belief among the trade is that this will be one of those years where big crops get bigger. Even with the decline in acres there is still a good probability that carryover in 2014 will top 2 billion bushels.

Memphis, TN Cotton and Tobacco Programs

Cotton Comment

Cotton prices continue to climb as today. Wet weather across much of the Southeast as well as additional fund buying remains supportive for cotton prices. However, the run-up in prices over the last week has led to prices into over sold territory and will like begin to make corrections. These types of gains have occurred 3-times over the last 6 months with declines after the high of 5 to 10 cents. Current prices offer one of the best pricing opportunities of the season and are like to fall faster than they rose.

Rice Comment

Rice prices continue to climb today as prices move close to resistance at $15.70. Rice prices continue to consolidate in about a $1 trading range between $15 and $16. The condition of this year’s rice crop continues to look good, with good rains across much of the growing region over the last week, the crop is likely to maintain or improve on current conditions.
