Soybean Comment

November soybeans gapped higher and closed above key resistance at $13. Expectations are for slight deterioration to be reported in today’s crop conditions report, but hot, dry forecasts have traders expecting more significant damage to yield potential to occur this week. Additional resistance between about $13.20 and $13.35 will be a tough challenge as we move closer to harvest. Increased acreage in South America could also limit the upside potential.

Wheat Comment

Wheat prices continue to strengthen as corn and soybean prices climb. The recent run-up in commodity prices has helped wheat manage stay above support near $6. If weather situation turns and corn and soybean prices decline expect wheat to move to test support near $6. As long as corn and soybean prices remain strong wheat will maintain current prices.

Arkansas Daily Grain Report

Corn Comment

Corn prices post strong gains. With last week’s discovery of more than 3.5 million acres of prevented planted corn, weather conditions become even more important. Today’s drought monitor shows abnormally dry conditions continuing to creep into the parts of the Midwest. After the markets closed the USDA released this week’s crop condition report which showed a decline in the crop good to excellent rating from 64% last week to 61% this week. This news will likely help support gains again tomorrow, at least early on. As prices move closer to $5 this should be considered a good pricing opportunity as the market is likely to weaken as harvest gets underway.

Memphis, TN Cotton and Tobacco Programs

Cotton Comment

Cotton prices weakened today. With markets moving into an overbought situation, this may be the beginning of a selloff to move prices back below 90-cents, likely into the 87 – 82-cent range. Cotton prices continue to find support from funds who continue to move money back into commodities. This factor may limit losses if/when the market turns.

Rice Comment

Rice futures ended lower after following soybeans higher in early dealings. Today’s chart action looks worrisome, as November charted a bearish key reversal. In the meantime, prices continue to consolidate in about a $1 trading range between $15 and $16. The condition of this year’s rice crop continues to look good, but farmers are worried that cool, cloudy conditions could negatively impact grain fill during heading.

Cattle Comment

Cattle prices closed the day mixed. Deferred contracts were supported by higher corn prices, which sparked ideas that herd expansion will be curtailed due to higher feed costs.
