Soybean Comment

The government shutdown and expiration of the farm bill today resulted in negativity in the commodity markets, which, of course, is not surprising. Soybean futures charted sharp losses again today. November completed a 50% retracement of the late summer gains on Monday, and looks headed for the 62% level of $12.57 in short order. In one of the last reports issued before the shutdown, USDA reported some improvement in the soybean crop thanks to rains in late September. 53% of the crop is currently rated good to excellent. Nationwide, 11% of the crop has been harvested.

Wheat Comment

While wheat prices were down yesterday due to extreme losses in the corn and soybeans, wheat manage to rebound slightly today. Continued strength in the export market is providing support for prices. The market will likely continue sees gains as yesterday's report showed another strong week of exports.

Corn Comment

Corn prices continue to decline today. Yesterday stock report continues way heavily on this market pushing prices lower. The market is seeing additional pressure as Midwest harvest gets fully underway. Over next few days expect prices to continue to decline. It is likely that by the time the USDA releases its new supply and demand estimate corn prices will be between $4.25 and $4. While the prices should receive some relief next week with a reduction in acreage, the USDA yield estimates will be critical to tell us where prices will go as we head into the winter.

Memphis, TN Cotton and Tobacco Programs

Cotton Comment

After being down more than a penny early in the session cotton prices managed to rebound close down well off of daily lows. After trading near the top of the 88 to 82-cent trading range prices tumbled today. With ever weakening global fundamentals expect cotton prices to be very volatile as we head into harvest.

Rice Comment

Overall market weakness and harvest pressure are taking a toll on rice prices. November futures violated several levels of support today and closed below the key $15 mark. The next level of support is the February low of $14.77. USDA now says that 58% of the crop has been harvested nation-wide, while in Arkansas 57% has been harvested.

Cattle Comment

Cattle futures were mostly lower. Packer margins are solidly in the red this morning, adding to the negative undertone. December futures are about $6 premium to cash prices, and that will limit the upside potential of the market.

Hog Comment

USDA confirmed hog herd expansion on Friday, and that sent the market lower today. Concerns about the government shutdown and the resulting lack of USDA reports will likely result in further weakness.
