Soybean Comment

Soybean futures ended strongly today. The market has found some support at $12.63 for the time being, and rains through key growing regions are delaying harvest, giving the market a bit of a boost. The government shut-down has resulted in a weak dollar, and that is also providing support for commodities.

Wheat Comment

Wheat prices closed up strongly today. Usually, on Thursday we would be talking about the Export Sales Report, but due to the shutdown that report was cancelled. Reports of a large wheat sale to Japan are helping add some support this market. With the inspection report and export sales report on hold, the wheat market will rely on news of these large sales to help support a fragile wheat market. With weak fundamentals in corn and soybeans, could make it difficult for wheat to maintain gains over the last couple of weeks, without fresh export news.

Corn Comment

Corn prices stopped their free fall today. After Monday’s stock report shocked the market with more supplies than anyone thought could be out there the market lost more than 15-cents. The combination of a good harvest and larger supplies pressured prices to new lows. If the current shutdown continues into next week the USDA will not release the October supply and demand report. This will leave the market to continue to trade on expectations, which are for acreage to be down in 2013. While these thoughts will support prices the outlook remains questionable for corn, and prices are likely not through looking for the harvest lows. Once the market makes it through this harvest glut prices should rebound somewhat as the current low prices have offered buyers an excellent opportunity to lock in lower prices, which should help support both domestic and international demand.

Cotton prices closed higher today, again today. As prices move higher, cotton is moving dangerously close to being overbought. As prices move towards the top of the trading range at 88-cents watch for prices to drop sharply. Cotton maintains resistance at 88-cents and support at 82-cents.

Rice Comment

Harvest pressure and the expiration of the farm bill continue to weigh on rice futures. A 100 million metric ton stockpile of rice in Asia is also looming large over the market. November futures have violated several levels of support so far this week. The next level of support is the March low of $14.77. Psychological resistance will be seen at $15 on a rebound.

Cattle Comment

Cattle futures ended mixed. Packer margins are solidly in the red this morning, adding to the negative undertone. December futures are about $6 premium to cash prices, and that will limit the upside potential of the market.
