Arkansas Daily Grain Report

FOB Memphis Elevator Crops

Wheat Comment

Wheat continues to climb higher, closing above $7 for the first time in more than 3 months. Strong prices now continue to offer producers a good opportunity to sell 2014 wheat. This market remains tied to the export market and concerns about global production. The problem with wheat is that these gains are typically short lived as wheat is being planted somewhere in the world 12-months out of the year, so by the time harvest gets here next June it is likely these prices will have fallen off substantially.

Arkansas Daily Grain Report

Corn Comment

Corn prices ended the day stronger today, as December moved closer to $4.50. The USDA has officially postponed the October report forcing the market to trade on what it thinks it knows. While reports continue to come in of good yields in many area, harvest remains slow, with wet weather across much of the Midwest this weekend. Adding to the gains is expectations of acreage being removed due to prevented planting. Corn moved above resistance at $4.47 today, this previous low now becomes support for the market. Expect sideways trade or small gains to continue until this market gets a better hand as to the size of this crop.

Memphis, TN Cotton and Tobacco Programs

Cotton Comment

Cotton prices fell sharply lower today as the threat of the hurricane diminishes and rainfall looks to be much lighter. December cotton is close to support at 82-cents, which has been a firm floor in this market for months. Expect prices to move lower through the rest of this week and probably test these lows as prices continue to feel the pressure of large global supplies.

Rice Comment

Rice futures were sharply lower early, but bounced back to close near the middle of the day’s trading range. On the weekly continuation, there is support at $14.63 and $14.50. Psychological resistance will be seen at $15 on a rebound. Harvest pressure and the expiration of the farm bill continue to weigh on rice futures. A 100 million metric ton stockpile of rice in Asia is also looming large over the market.

Cattle Comment

Cattle futures posted losses across the board. Lower stock markets were troublesome, as the weakness calls in to question potential for meat demand. Also weighing on the market is the lack of market news from USDA due to the shutdown.

Hog Comment

Hog futures ended the day mixed. Traders are still anticipating a smaller herd due to porcine epidemic virus, with reported cases rising rapidly.
