Soybean Comment

Soybeans ended higher after charting losses in early dealings. November moved to a new two-month low this morning. That low, $12.61, now becomes support. The soybean market continues to be pressured by expectations of a big crop. Private estimates have the crop pegged at between 40% and 57% harvested.

Wheat Comment

Wheat prices saw little change today. Price rally over the last few weeks has stalled as the market has seen no new export reports. The strong export demand during mid to late September drove prices higher. Without those reports we are seeing December wheat prices consolidate into a sideways trading pattern between $6.85 and $7.00. The traders remain cautious as they wait to see what the facts are for this market.

Corn Comment

Corn prices rallied today after posting new lows overnight. While the market remains pressured by expectations for a big harvest, prices continue to hold above $4.30. While we remain in the dark about crop conditions and actual export demand due to the shutdown, the market views rains across the northern Corn Belt and improving Gulf basis as support to help boost prices in this oversold market. While the jury is still out on this year’s crop, we are very likely to see additional declines in this market. While March and May contracts are likely see prices rally as soybeans and corn battle for acreage in February, there is little to support major gains in the December contract. In fact, it is more likely to see prices move lower as reports for this crop begin flowing again.

Cotton Comment

Cotton prices posted modest gains today. The continued weakening of the U.S. dollar due to the debt ceiling debacle remains supportive for cotton prices. Gains in the cotton market remain limited as harvest gets fully underway and glut of international supplies in the marketplace.

Rice Comment

Only the two nearby rice contracts traded today, but ended the day with small gains. News of new exports remains supportive for prices. November has support at $14.63 and $14.50. Psychological resistance will be seen at $15 on a rebound. Harvest pressure and a large stockpile of rice in Asia continue to loom over the market.

Hog Comment

Hog futures were mostly lower on cash market weakness and technical selling. Demand uncertainty continues to be a factor as well.
