Soybean Comment

Soybean futures were lower today despite relatively good fundamental news. NOPA’s September crush report came in at the high end of trade expectations. The total was down 1.6% from August and over 9% from September 2012, but the total was expected. A positive export inspections report showed 47.4 million bushels, above trade expectations. November charted an inside day, and Monday’s low, $12.61, now becomes support. The soybean market continues to be pressured by expectations of a big crop. Private estimates have the crop pegged at between 40% and 57% harvested.

Wheat Comment

Wheat prices continue to move lower. The buying over the last few weeks spurred on by exports has pushed this market into overbought territory. This combined with the lack of news on the export front has caused prices to stall and begin to trade in a sideways or downward pattern. With prices unable to break through the $7 ceiling, prices may be headed back towards support at $6.67. With weakness in some of the outside market, wheat desperately needs some positive export news to sustain recent gains.

Corn Comment

Corn prices continue to show strength today. Wet weather across much of the Midwest is providing support for the market. While market is still expecting a big harvest, the slowness of this year’s harvest continues raise concern. While much of the crop is already made these rains and potential for freezing temps could damage the quality of this year’s crop. If these delays continue expect prices to continue to move higher. With the market being in an oversold position this news could help fuel prices to move back towards resistance around $4.50. While this move is likely possible don’t expect prices to move to the next support level around $4.70. Prices will likely lose momentum, before this can be achieved. A move to $4.50 or above this week will likely provide one of the last pricing opportunities of the fall. As Washington moves closer to an end to the shutdown, reports will begin to flow again. One thing we have consistently seen this year is the market trade bullish on reports only to be disappointed in the numbers: acreage report, stocks reports, ect.

Memphis, TN Cotton and Tobacco Programs

Cotton Comment

Cotton prices continued to inch higher today. With price near the middle of the 82 to 87 cent trading range prices are less likely to make any significant test of lows at 82-cents. The continued weakening of the U.S. dollar due to the debt ceiling debacle remains supportive for cotton prices. Gains in the cotton market will remain limited due to harvest pressure and a glut of international supplies in the marketplace.

Rice Comment

Rice futures posted huge gains today. News from Beijing today suggests that China’s rice production is likely to decline this year and that China may be more open to imports. The projected rice output in China is expected to drop 0.7% next year to 202.8 million metric tons. November has downtrending resistance at $15.65.

Cattle Comment

Cattle futures were lower across the board. Feeders were lower on technical selling amid overbought conditions. Losses in live cattle futures were limited by ideas that tight market ready supplies will force packers to bid higher to meet their needs.
