Soybean Comment

Soybean futures continued higher today, with nearby contracts posting double digit gains. News of strong demand and stiff competition for new crop supplies was supportive. Monday’s low, $12.61, now becomes support for November. Private reports continue to indicate impressive yields, and there are concerns that when USDA does finally release a new production report, the market could get hammered. USDA has said that they will decide by the end of the week whether or not to just cancel the October production and supply/demand reports, as the November reports are due to be released on November 8.

Arkansas Daily Grain Report

FOB Memphis Elevator Crops

Wheat Comment

Wheat prices moved higher today. With the government open again the market will be looking for reports to confirm strength in the export market. The lack of reports over the last few days has caused prices to stall and begin to trade in a sideways or downward pattern. With prices unable to break through the $7 ceiling, prices may be headed back towards support at $6.67.

Corn Comment

Corn prices closed the day virtually unchanged today. With soybeans and wheat posting strong gains, corn was unable to follow suit. With news reports of strong exports, the market remains cautious as it waits to see what the USDA when it begins releasing reports again. While prices are unlikely move much higher than resistance at around $4.50. A move near $4.50 will likely provide one of the last pricing opportunities of the fall. With Washington open again reports will begin to flow again sometime next week. One thing we have consistently seen this year is the market trade bullish on news reports only to be disappointed by what USDA says is the actual number: acreage report, stocks reports, ect.

Memphis, TN Cotton and Tobacco Programs

Cotton Comment

Cotton prices moved slightly higher today. With the government open again the cotton market will look for positive export reports to maintain any significant move. Gains in the cotton market will remain limited due to harvest pressure and a glut of international supplies in the marketplace.

Rice Comment

Rice futures were mixed after posting strong gains in early dealings. News from Beijing suggests that China’s rice production is likely to decline this year and that China may be more open to imports. The projected rice output in China is expected to drop 0.7% next year to 202.8 million metric tons. There is a large stockpile of rice across Asia, mostly in Thailand and Vietnam, that will continue to limit the upside potential of the market. Technically, November has downtrending resistance near $15.60.

Cattle Comment

Live cattle futures charted a huge bearish reversal today. Early gains were attributed to a strong cash trade. However, those gains pushed prices into overbought territory as packers are not expected to pay current prices for fed cattle as beef values have not kept up with the recent uptrend in cattle prices.
