STEWART WEAVER ELECTED CHAIRMAN OF THE SORGHUM CHECKOFF BOARD. . . . .The Sorghum Checkoff board of directors voted on new officers at their meeting in Lubbock, Texas.  Weaver will serve a one year term on the executive committee for the Sorghum Checkoff.

. . . .This three day convention and trade show is open to all friends of corn, soybeans, wheat and sorghum- from growers to member associations to agribusiness to farm media.  Commodity Classic is February 28 – March 2 in Kissimmee, Florida.  For more information or registration, please visit

. . . . .On Wednesday, February 13th, Arkansas State University will host its annual agribusiness conference at the Convocation Center on the campus in Jonesboro. The event will feature speakers including Joe Outlaw, agriculture economist with Texas A&M, and Bart Chilton, Commodity Futures Trading Commissioner. Their focus will be on the farm bill and commodity markets. Anyone is welcome to attend the meeting

FORESTRY COMMISSION SEEKS 5-CENTS ACRE INCREASE IN FIRE PROTECTION FEE. . . .The Arkansas Forestry Commission has decided to seek only a 5-cent increase in the fire protection fee after the Farm Bureau and Arkansas Forestry Association both endorsed a 5-cent increase.  The bill is expected to be filed soon and face an uphill battle in the legislature as many new members have signed a no new tax pledge.

. . . . .A grain bin safety training program is scheduled for Thursday, March 14 at the Brinkley Convention Center, 1501 Weatherby Drive in Brinkley. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m.; the program will begin at 10 a.m. Lunch and refreshments will be served.

. . . The annual Farm Bureau Winter Commodity Division meetings are set for Wednesday, January 30 at the Wyndham Riverfront Hotel in North Little Rock. Schedule of Activities is as follows:

8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. - Registration

9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. - Cotton, Beef, Cattle, Soybean, Specialty Crops, Swine, Forestry

11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. - Lunch

1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. - Dairy, Rice, Wheat & Feed Grains, Poultry, Equine, Aquaculture

2013 ARKANSAS RICE ANNUAL MEETING SCHEDULED FOR JANUARY 18. . . . .The Arkansas Rice Council and the Arkansas Rice Producers Group will hold their annual meeting and trade show January 18th in Jonesboro at the fairgrounds.  The meeting will include exhibits and a trade show as well as presentations from industry leaders on various topics.  Lunch will also be provided for visitors.
