Farm Bill Information
UPDATE: In 2012, Farm Bill negotiations stalled in the face of budget talks. Congress decided to extend the 2008 Farm Bill until September of 2013. In the new Congress several bills have been introduced that are deterimental to agriculture and Farm Bureau is opposing several of those bills. Farm Bureau continues to advocate for long term farm policy. For the current year the 2008 bill remains in force although it has been impacted by the sequester.
On January 1, 2013, Congress passed the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 to avert the fiscal cliff and the next day President Obama signed the Act into law. The "fiscal cliff" deal was primarily enacted to avoid automatic tax hikes and spending cuts, but also included provisions extending portions of the 2008 Farm Bill for nine months through September 30, 2013.
On June 18, 2008 Congress overrode President Bush's veto on H.R. 6124, the Food, Conservation, and Energy Act of 2008, ensuring that all parts of the Farm Bill are enacted into law. Previously, Congress had passed H.R. 2419 over the President's veto, containing 14 of 15 Farm Bill titles.
