On Sept. 27, Rodney Baker (left), Arkansas Farm Bureau’s incoming executive vice president, was named Distinguished Alumnus of the Year for the agricultural economics and agribusiness department in the Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences at the University of Arkansas. Steve Halbrook, head of the department, presented the honor. Baker said: "The thing that has struck me, being someone who grew up on a small east Arkansas farm, with a dad who very much loved agriculture and who very much supported education, was that there was a natural partnership between agriculture and education, a natural partnership between farmers and the state and the University of Arkansas Bumpers College and the Division of Agriculture. That has served this state tremendously for decades and decades. I hope this institution never loses sight of that. This is the campus where farmers have trusted, not only the future of their industry and their business, but the future of their kids to this institution. I think you have performed well, and I am very appreciative of that fact, being a product of that situation." Baker earned his bachelor’s degree in animal science and his master’s degree in agricultural economics with a minor in agricultural business, both from the University of Arkansas.
