8/12/2013 at 12:00 a.m.

BRINKLEY — Jenna Martin of Hickory Ridge (Cross County) was named 2013-14 Miss Arkansas Rice on Saturday at the Brinkley Convention Center. Martin, who is home schooled, is the daughter of Dennis and Jennifer Martin of Hickory Ridge.

Makenzie Bennett of Carlisle (Lonoke County) was first runner-up, and second runner-up was Savanna Bisswanger of Ethel (Arkansas County). Other county winners participating in the state finals were Lydia Price of Brookland (Craighead County), Lexie Van Houten of Hazen (Prairie County) and Sawyer Ramsey of Palestine (St. Francis County).

The goal of the Miss Arkansas Rice program is to encourage interest in rice promotion and to publicize the importance of the Arkansas rice industry to the state's economy. Contestants were judged on their promotion activities, knowledge of the rice industry and rice-cooking skills. Jenna’s recipe was "Crockpot Rice Dressing."

The Arkansas Rice Council sponsors the annual contest in cooperation with Arkansas Farm Bureau and the Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service.

Arkansas’ rice industry supports 2,500 rice farms, employs more than 35,000 Arkansans and contributes over $4 billion annually to the state’s economy.
