NEW ORLEANS — Stanley Reed, Arkansas Farm Bureau president, was re-elected Tuesday to his third two-year term on the American Farm Bureau Federation Board of Directors in the final session of the organization’s 89th annual convention.
Reed, a cotton farmer from Marianna, was elected in December to a fifth term as president of Arkansas Farm Bureau.
The South Regional Caucus, composed of voting delegates from 14 southern state Farm Bureaus, nominated Reed for the AFBF board position.
“I’m honored to be asked to serve on the board again,” Reed said. “There are several critical tasks facing agriculture we must address, not the least of which is securing passage of the 2007 Farm Bill. Also, the issues of foreign trade, alternative biofuels, farm animal welfare and a tangle of government regulations are of great importance to the future of America’s farmers and ranchers. I have tried to bring an Arkansas farmers’ view to these important issues.
“I appreciate the continued confidence the southern region has placed in me, and look forward to working on their behalf.”
Before becoming president of Arkansas Farm Bureau, Reed was the organization’s vice president four years and the state board’s secretary/treasurer for six. He has been on that board 17 years. Additionally, Reed is vice president of the Southern Farm Bureau Casualty Insurance Co.
Before entering Farm Bureau’s state leadership, Reed was on Lee County Farm Bureau’s board and its president in 1982–84.
Reed graduated from the University of Arkansas with a bachelor’s degree in agricultural engineering and later earned a degree in law. He currently chairs the UofA Board of Trustees.
